域名种类和域名体系（域名与管理局列表）
域名，又称“顶级域名(TLD)”，包括两大类：一类是“通用顶级域名(gTLD)”；另一类是“国家及地区代码顶级域名(ccTLD)”。
一般情况下，域名由a-z中的字母、0-9中的数字和“-”组成，不可以是空格，或者其它标点符号，头尾亦不可以是“-”；至少包括3个字符，最多不能超过63个字符。
域名是将名字绑定到一个互联网协议系统，同样，反过来把互联网协议系统绑定到一个指定的域名。互联网上每一个服务器都有自己的IP地址，由以句点作为分隔的字符串组成。然而这些长字符串和电话号码一样，不容易记忆。有了域名人们可以利用名称替代数字访问互联网中的网页、发送电子邮件。
域名右边的扩展名（如.com或.net）被称为一级域名或TLD（顶级域名）。
现有顶级域名超过270个：
无赞助商的通用顶级域名（gTLDs）或国际域名有.com、.net、.org、.int、.arpa、.biz、.info、.name和.pro。无赞助商的顶级域名注册时比有赞助商的顶级域名所受的限制更少。
赞助通用顶级域名即行业专属域名，包括.edu、.gov、.mil、.aero、.cooper、.museum、.jobs、.mobi、.travel、.tel、.cat、.asia和.xxx。赞助顶级域名是一种有赞助商的专门的域名，代表顶级域名所服务的团体。
含两个字符的顶级域名（如.cn、.uk、.de等）对应250多个国家和地区名称的官方缩写。这些域名被称为国家代码顶级域名或缩写成ccTLDs。每个国家代码顶级域名背后都有一个注册运营者，根据当地政策（例如，要在ccTLDs中注册一个名字，注册方必须是本地居民）来运营国家代码顶级域名。
国际域名机构考虑到适应互联网地区语言和文化的因素，在基本的域名体系上基础上又推出了很多国际化多国语言域名，即IDN.TLD
不同的域名后缀由不同的域名管理机构在管理和运作，不同的域名种类有不同的注册规则和要求，有的国别域名申请时候要求提供符合本地条件的信息或者需要提供符合规定的证件资料甚至书面申请函才能给予审批通过注册。而且不同种类的域名注册年限、续费期、续费宽限期、赎回期、删除期等，各种域名管理局的规定都是不同的，还有否允许注册成功后修改注册信息或者是否允许转移注册商不同种类的域名管理局都有不同的规定。这些规定就被称作域名注册条件和域名注册规则。如果在域名注册时没有遵守域名注册条件和域名注册规则，那么轻的情况下可能给您的域名使用管理带来不便或者没有及时续费过期被删除，严重的情况下您注册的域名会直接被相应注册局删除且不退回相应款项。所以请大家在注册域名时特别是国别域名时一定要先把域名注册规则搞清楚。而且域名在到期前一定要提前续费。
2011年6月20日，国际互联网名称与数字地址分配机构（ICANN）以13∶3(其中一票反对，两票弃权)，高达80%的赞同率，通过新通用顶级域(new gTLD)计划。这意味着，全球仅有的二十几种互联网通用顶级域名，如.com、.net、.org等，将会增加至几百甚至上千种，人们所熟悉的品牌名称、行业和各领域标识性词汇都将有可能成为新的域名后缀。一些域名机构和域名商在努力吹捧并实施这个计划。但全球多数知名企业公司认为新通用顶级域名计划会对企业品牌保护带来严重负面影响，如果这个计划付诸实施，这些企业不得不拿出巨额的资金用于注册与自己品牌有关的域名以便对自己的品牌进行保护。更有专家称这个新域名计划就是新一轮的互联网圈地运动，甚至有的专家称新域名计划仿佛是打开了互联网的潘多拉墨盒，会导致互联网混乱不堪。
